Dec' 2009 Varsity Match - Report

Autumn/Winter 09/10 Reports

Sunday 17th January - Cardiff Cross Challenge. The race to the 2010 World Cross Country Championships started in style at the Cardiff Cross Country. Several TAC athletes travelled to pit themselves against high class competition. Click for UKA Report and Provisional results.

6th Dec. 2009 - TAC host Avon & Somerset Champs (incl. Gwent XC League) at Hestercombe. Charlotte Fisher reports:
Somerset & Avon Cross-Country Championships It was fitting that the hosts of this year’s County Cross-Country Championships should enjoy such a successful afternoon of endurance running.Taunton AC scooped 10 medals across the 10 age group races, with 3 county champions amongst the medal winners. The races were incorporated within the third race in Gwent Cross-Country League with runners travelling to Taunton from across South Wales and the Bristol and Avon areas to contest the event. The traditional style, rugged and tough course on the farmlands above Hestercombe gardens proved popular with the runners.
It was a double victory for the clubs leading U13 boy & girl with county title victories for Luke Reynolds and Holly Brown. Brown topped off a very successful weekend of running having finished 2nd in the national final of the English Schools Cup for her school Queens College on the Saturday. In winning Sunday’s race she led the club to a team victory where they now top the leader board in the Gwent League with just two fixtures remaining.
It was pleasing to see a delighted Rowan Preece take the U15 boys title, a deserving result for a dedicated youngster. He also led a Taunton team with real strength in depth to a team victory which included an unexpected silver place from Connor Banks who had been out of action for some weeks.  There were strong runs from Ben Hawkins and Isaac Taschimowitz in helping secure the team result. The tough terrain of Hestercombe seemed to be matched by the gritty determination of Taunton ’s Harriet Rogers who hung on to the silver medal place, another athlete who always works hard in training and in races.
In the U17 Men’s race training partners Blair Brown and Simon Cooper were rewarded for their efforts with gold and bronze medals. Whilst in the U20 Women’s Hannah Taunton added another medal to her growing collection of awards having finished 3rd in her age group.
The 8 junior medals were added to by the two senior awards which went to Mark Hopkinson with an impressive sprint finish to the bronze medal position and Richard Caburn who took silver in the vet 40 category.
Full results for Avon&Somerset Champs can be found here, and for the full result of the Gwent League event here.
Taunton AC would like to thank the farmers of Hestercombe & Volis farms for agreeing to the use of their land and also Hestercombe Gardens for use of the parking areas. The club’s cross-country runners are next in action at the South West Championships in early January.

Dec. 2009 Varsity Cross Country - TAC lead the way
Two long standing junior members of Taunton made a unique first for the local athletic club. Distance runners Naomi Taschimowitz and Rachel Heard were both selected for the Cambridge University Cross-Country team. Just six athletes are selected to represent the Blues teamin this famous sporting challenge and from a university population of 20,000 it was unusual to have two athletes from the same club.
Taschimowitz now in her second year at university competed in this event in 2008 finishing 4th, whilst for Heard it was a first time experience. Although not the obvious favourite to win those in the know had a sneaking suspicion that on current form Taschimowitz could win and when at the half way point she started to break away from the leading group they wished they placed a bet. Taschimowitz victory was especially sweet having finished 4th in 2008, with the added spice of beating Oxford ’s Canadian international Michelle Sykes. Both women were delighted to be selected for the team, but disappointed that in the team event it was the dark blues who ran away with victory this year.

Autumn/Winter 08/09 Reports:

22 March 2009 : Following the 5th and final Wessex League fixture (held at Avon Heath, Poole this Sunday) Taunton AC confirmed their top Team placings for the 2008/9 season in both the U15 Girls category and Senior Mens category (with teams of no fewer than 3 runners having had to compete in at least 4 of the five races). BictonJan.2009

To obtain an aggregate placing in the Individual League runners had to complete at least 4 of the 5 events: here Joe Merriweather took a convincing overall 1st place in the U13 boys section; in the U15 Girls Harriet Rogers was placed 2nd and Rachel Langbein 4th overall; with Mark Lewis 2nd in the Senior Men's League. Full results of all five individual events and aggregate scores are now available at the Wessex League web-site.

21 February 2009 : Saucony National XC Champs at Parliament Hill : Taunton AC demonstrated growing strength in depth at the recent National Cross-Country Championships held on the famously tough course at Parliament Hill fields, Hampstead Heath. Seven of the clubs 12 competitors finished in the top 50 runners in races which attracted up to 400 runners. Rubbing shoulders with some of the country’s best juniors Taunton’s young athletes held their own.  The racing conditions were uncharacteristically warm & sunny for cross-country running, but underfoot it was the usual thick cloying mud. The U15 boys set the tone of the day with two excellent performances from Blair Brown (20th) and Simon Cooper 31st. The training partners have been nip and tuck all season, but it was Brown who on this occasion was more fluent in his running and seemed to enjoy the long hill sections of the course. Thom Fowler made his debut and did well to finish the race having only just returned to training.

Probably the most competitive of the junior races on the day was the U17/U20 Women’s race won by Beijing Olympian, Steph Twell. Four Taunton AC athletes competed in this event with Naomi Taschimowitz (U20) running well within her capabilities to finish 18th, Rachel Heard (U20) battling away to 40th, Catherine Blew (U17) 41st and Laura James (U17) 63rd. Isla Ness (U15) produced her best race of the season with a gritty performance that saw her running with greater confidence to finish 59th. Training partner Harriet Rogers had the misfortune to be one of the many runners whose shoes came off in the thick mud, but she bravely completed the race to finish a commendable 141st given the circumstances.

In the U17 Men’s race Charlie Maclean showed a marked return to the sort of form with which he had hoped to begin his season before injury intervened and was pleased with his 32nd place. Finally, the youngest members of the team Joe Merriweather and Ben Hawkins both ran strongly on this tough course to finish 30th and 157th respectively from 356 finishers. For Merriweather this was a new experience and one which he seemed to handle with ease.

January 2009 : SouthWest Colleges XC races - We done to TAC members Rachel Heard (Richard Huish) and Hannah Taunton (SCAT) who following strong performances at the SW Colleges races have been selected to represent the SouthWest at the National Colleges event later this year.

4 Jan 2009 : SouthWest Championships at Bicton Park nr Exmouth. For full listings of individual and team results click age groups of interest here: U13 ; U15 ; U17 ; S+U20W ; S+U20M. and see photo galleries. Event Report received from Charlotte Fisher : "A strong Taunton AC contingent of junior runners attended the South West Championships on the challenging course at Bicton Park in Devon . BictonJan.2009There were a healthy number of entries from across the South West with 50 to 60 club runners lining up at the start of each of the junior age groups and Taunton AC produced 3 individual medallists. Unfortunately there were no individual gold medals on this occasion but the club showed real strength in depth with a further three athletes finishing in the top ten and the club winning the team event in one of the age groups and finishing third in another. Several members of the clubs also picked up medals for their contribution to the county team competition that was also going on between Somerset , Devon , Cornwall , Dorset , Avon & Wiltshire.

Medal winners included Simon Cooper (3rd in the U15 Boys), Holly Brown (3rd in the U13 Girls) and Naomi Taschimowitz (2nd in the U20s and 5th overall in the Seniors). Just missing out on the medals in 4th was Blair BrownBictonJan.09 (U15 Boy) and there were also top ten placings for Joe Merriweather (U13 Boy) and Rachel Heard (U20 Women). Holly Brown, Joe Merriweather, Simon Cooper & Blair Brown all picked up golds for their contribution to the Somerset winning age group teams.

Further down the field there were some very promising performances by Harriet Rogers who was Somerset ’s 3rd scorer from four and looked impressive on the tough hill sections of the course. Rachel Langbein also ran very well and produced a superb finishing surge of one of the trickiest bits of the course to help Taunton AC to a third place for the club along with team mates Isla Ness and Emily Ruffell-Hazell.

Taunton AC’s U15 Boys picked up the clubs only gold medals of the day with an impressive team effort led by Cooper & Brown, but completed by a stirling performance from Connor Banks who given he was not feeling particularly well on the day clearly has plenty more to come and from Isaac Taschimowitz whose dogged effort ensured the team clinched gold from Bristol and West AC.

In the Senior Women’s race despite still suffering with a cold Naomi Taschimowitz demonstrated what a difference some continuity in her training makes and looked like an athlete with plenty more to come. Team mate Rachel Heard (U20) ran with her usual distinctly gritty and determined style but was cruelly pushed back from 4th to 6th in the final stages when the speed merchants took control, nonetheless this was another strong performance from an athlete who has made steady but significant progress over the years.
