About Us

The origin of Taunton AC stretches as far back as the 1880’s making it one of the oldest clubs in the country. Today Taunton AC remains the only affiliated club in the area of Taunton Deane, West Somerset & Sedgemoor offering opportunity in track & field, as well as cross-country, road running, and sportshall athletics.

Since 2001 we have been able to almost treble our membership, and have enjoyed much team success in a variety of competitions, whilst individual members of the club have competed at county, regional, national and international level.

We recognise, however, that competition results are not the only measure of a club’s success. Our primary aim here at Taunton AC is to witness individuals enjoying sport, fulfilling their potential and at the simplest level just being active and enjoying the physical and psychological benefits which sport brings to our lives. We try to achieve all of this through quality coaching and appropriate competition.

TAC were among the first in the Southwest to gain Club Mark accreditation (Sport England’s stamp of approval that Taunton AC is a child-friendly, safe and effective club for young athletes), and in 2005 were voted UK Athletics Junior Club of the Year 2005 for the South West region. Then in 2006 we won South West Track & Field Club of the Year.

Then: The origin of Taunton AC stretches as far back as the 1880’s making it one of the oldest clubs in the country. Unlike most clubs of such an age Taunton AC has never had a permanent base of its own until now & the absence of a track or club house over the years  means that precious little exists in the way of archives. However, we do know that Taunton AC started life as a sports club for men & emerged as an athletics club at the turn of the 20th century. Women & girls have been competing for the club for over half a century. During the sixties & the eighties the club was particularly strong in endurance running & the men’s team took on a number of much bigger & more well-known clubs from London . The absence of a track and the challenging running terrains of the Quantock and Blackdown hills were probably the foundation for these successes.

Now:    Over a century since its formation Taunton AC remains the only affiliated club in the area of Taunton Deane, West Somerset & Sedgemoor offering opportunity in track & field, as well as cross-country, road running & sportshall athletics.  After a fallow period during the nineties the club is currently enjoying new found success. Since drawing up our first development plan in 2001 we have trebled our membership & continue to attract new members across all age groups & of all levels of ability. Not only do we have more members, but more of our members are active more of the time.    We have also expanded in terms of membership, but also in the widening range of opportunities it offers its members in terms of coaching, training and competition.   We are particularly proud of our commitment to young people & if you are reading this as a parent or a young athlete then we feel confident in saying that Taunton AC is the club for your son or daughter!

The Future : The future holds real opportunities for the club to continue to grow in numbers & to further develop the opportunities for its athletes.      Since 2000 Taunton AC has worked closely with the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, who have strongly supported a number of club’s the development projects & worked hard to acquire a facility in Taunton for this great sport of athletics.      The completion of the all weather training facility with floodlights has seen the club training nights more popular than eve before, especially during the dark winter evenings. The facility enables us to offer coaching in events that we were not previously able to offer. And  the club is working towards raising standards. Over the years Taunton AC has regularly had to move venues & the nomadic nature of the club over the years has made development work difficult.

It is testament to the club’s long standing officers & coaches that it has survived. Perhaps one of our biggest challenges is in recruiting new volunteers to help with the running of this growing club.
